Memo to:
Homecoming 2007 Participants
Subject: Change of Homecoming Alcohol Distribution Policy
The University of Arizona Alumni Association (UAAA) is pleased to sponsor the 2007 Homecoming event, "Exploring New Frontiers," to be held during November 3 on the Mall. The UAAA is keeping with its longstanding policy of preserving the unique traditions of the U of A's Homecoming while ensuring that the event is conducted in as safe and enjoyable manner as possible for all participants.
Legal consumption of alcohol has been permitted within the fenced, tented area of the Mall, and this policy will continue for 2007.
However, a change in the manner in which alcohol will be distributed at Homecoming was brought about after agreement this spring by a University-wide task force comprised of the Arizona Department of Liquor Licenses and Control; the Campus Health Department; Center for Student Involvement & Leadership; Dean of Students; Office of Risk Management/Safety; UA Police Department; University Attorney's Office; and the UAAA.
The rationale for this policy is based on the following considerations:
· The State Department of Liquor Licenses and Control has expressed growing interest in underage and excessive consumption of alcohol on all three university campuses.
· The new policy is part of a continuous effort to review and improve upon the way we manage alcohol consumption at Homecoming. There is unacceptable risk in placing students in the position of providing alcohol for their respective tents.
In order to minimize the possibility of underage and/or excessive drinking, the following distribution policy will be in effect:
· Beer will be provided exclusively by Golden Eagle Distributors. Bartending services will be provided by professional bartenders.
· Beer will be available for purchase from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
·
Six beer stations will be located within the tented area. Four to six bartenders
will work each beer station.
· Beer tickets will be priced at $3.00 in advance/$4.00 at the door.
Advance purchase forms will be available online on October 3 at www.arizonaalumni.com/homecoming
and payment is due to the UAAA by October 15. Tickets are non-refundable and
will be available for pick-up at the Alumni Association (Swede Johnson Building)
on November 1-2 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Only representatives of legal age
from each organization may order and pick up tickets. All persons will be required
to show ID when picking up pre-paid tickets.
o There will be a two-drink limit per visit to the beer stations (state law).
o Beer will be sold in 16-oz. collectable tumblers.
o Wristbands must be displayed to purchase beer. There will be five wristband/ID checkpoints within the tented area.
· No alcohol may be brought into or taken out of the alcohol service area (as defined by fencing) except by the authorized beer vendor.
Note: No person under age 21 will be permitted to possess beer or exchange a ticket for beer.
Fraternities and sororities have historically comprised the largest amount of tented space on the Mall. The change in the alcohol policy is consistent with risk management policies that have long been in place at Greek letter organizations at the U of A campus (i.e., no chapter funds may be utilized to purchase alcohol or drink tickets).
Due to a lengthy waiting list for tent positions, we ask that you give consideration to the number of tents that you require.
We thank you for your consideration, and look forward to a great Homecoming event. Don't hesitate to contact Lisa Roubal at (520) 621-5233 if you have any questions.
